    What are B Corps?

    Benefit-Corporation(B-Corp)?

    B Corp is a movement led by B-Lab, a US nonprofit organization, to address social and environmental issues through businesses and to increase the number of companies that have a positive impact on society. Challenging the capitalist principle that the goal of corporate management is the pursuit of shareholder‘s profitability, the movement examines corporation’s level of social responsibility based on GIIRS (Global Impact Investing Ratings System)measurement tool and award Benefit Corporation (B corporation) certification to companies that pass the review.

    In the United States, the B Corp certification title affects consumers’ intentions in supporting brands and companies that explore societal concerns and conditions. Millennials (21 to 32 years old) are also interested in working for B Corp companies because of the greater impact and vision that these companies have. Major universities such as New York University, Columbia University and Yale University have programs that repays a portion of student loans to students hired by companies with B Corp certification in order to promote and encourage the growth of these kinds of companies.

    What is the Benefit-Corporation certification procedure?

    The certification is awarded after significant review, through the the Global Impact Investing Ratings System (GIIRS) evaluation program provided by B-Lab. The GIIRS examines four main criteria: corporate governance structure, working environment, contribution to community and environmental friendliness.The B Corp certification has been acknowledged for its credibility by awarding certification to world class companies that seek to solve various social problems based on corporate principles.Applicants are asked 180 questions and awarded the certificate if they score a minimum of 80 out of 200 points.
    ‘B-Corp’, which means Benefit-Corporation, is a global certification system for social enterprises created by B Lab (US nonprofit organization) in 2007 to solve socioenvironmental problems through business and to expand the number of companies that have a positive impact on society. B Corp certification is an honorable title given only to the companies that have been reviewed extensively through the GIIRS assessment among companies seeking to socially innovate beyond corporate profit and to do so based on corporate principles. There are approximately 2,050 B-Corps have the title in 130 industries in 50 countries worldwide.

    B-Corp certified companies include Warby Parker, the company that surpassed Apple, Alibaba, Google and Samsung and was titled the world’s most innovative company; “Honest Company,” founded by hollywood actress and celebrity Jessica Alba, a Hollywood Actress, and Ben&Jerry‘s, the famous ice cream company. General Bio is ranked with these companies in the top 10 among 2,050 B-Corp certified companies around the world.

    In order to be certified by B-Corp, companies are asked 180 questions that reflect the corporate governance structure, working environment, contribution to the community, environmental friendliness and accounting transparency through the Global Impact Investing Ratings System (GIIRS) which is an evaluation tool for social enterprises. Companies must score a minimum of 80 points out of 200 to pass for certification. Consisting of very rigorous and detailed evaluation items, GIIRS evaluates not only the ability to solve social problems and sustainability as a company, but also the company‘s level of contribution to employees, shareholders, customers and local communities as well as the environment. B-Corp is acknowledged worldwide as it is not an evaluation system just for certification but grants certification only to the few world-class companies that seek to solve various social problems based on corporate principles. This is helpful for consumers who are looking for authentic and exemplary companies, that they can trust and support.
